Thurles Sarsfields has a long and storied history which we are all proud of and we can honour that history by building the facilities we need to ensure we have a successful future for our male and female players across all codes. Currently we have almost 400 playing members across the GAA, Camogie and Ladies Football.
In 2014 Thurles Sarsfields purchased 14.1 acres of prime land on the Racecourse road to cater for a significant growth in our playing population. We have now finalised a long term development plan for the site that will best serve our players, supporters and the wider community for generations to come.
The site will be surrounded by a 1000 meter community walkway. This will be open to the public and will provide a safe, fully lit and off-road alternative for walking and jogging, while the area at the immediate front of the site will see the establishment of a community Orchard.
Behind this, a large all weather area will ensure that club activities can continue in all conditions. It will be divided by a ball wall at one end creating one large pitch space and a second smaller area, maximising the wall’s usability.
The existing main playing pitch is surrounded by a perimeter fence and path, and has a long viewing bank at the town side. Concrete terracing steps will be added along the bank, while the area behind the bank will be kept as a biodiversity friendly space along the walkway. Full, match standard Floodlighting will be added to the pitch on 6 lighting masts allowing activity to
continue on dark evenings. An electronic scoreboard will also be added in the top corner of the pitch.
A second full size natural playing pitch will occupy the area at the top of the site, bringing the total number of club pitches to 3. This pitch has now been sown and will come into use for the 2025 season. In time, this pitch will also be accompanied by high quality floodlights.
The main entrance will lead directly to the primary car park. Additional parking will be provided at the Killinan side of pitch 2 allowing the facility to cater for over 130 vehicles in total
A viewing stand with room for over 700 spectators will boarder the main pitch. Alongside this, the main dressing room building will be constructed in the corner closest to the 2 natural playing pitches.
This main building will consist of a set of public toilets and a shop at the stand side, a referee’s or first aid room, 4 dressing rooms equipped with showers and toilets, a small store room and a plant room. In time a kit room and a meeting or video room will also be added. Completing the building will be the addition of a large players gym. The Gym, as well as 2 of the dressing rooms, will have direct access to a smaller synthetic warm up area occupying the space to the rear of the building. This will create a multifunctional space for all types of training and preparation.
The delivery of this development plan will ensure that our players, supporters and community members benefit from having access to top quality facilities, and enable the club to continue to grow and compete at all levels for many years to come.
Our ability to turn this ambitious plan into a reality will be heavily dependent on the success of our fundraising efforts. All monies generated by the Development Lotto will be used for the development of our club facilities to cater for our large number of male and female members. Our lotto is €100 for the year with various payment options through ClubZap App or our Club website. To support, please sign up to our Development Lotto from just €2 a week, where all funds are ringfenced for the delivery of the outlined amenities.
